If the role has clearly been open for a long time, generally it’s because of one of the following reasons:
Company is always hiring this role (potentially b/c of high turnover Company is struggling to hire someone into the role Company isn’t actually hiring for this role

For cover letters I've always heard that you should only attach it if the application requires it

With that in mind…if the role is still open and it’s an opportunity you are genuinely interested in, by all means go for it and just apply

from what i know, the cover letter should elaborate why your skills/experiences makes you a good fit, and give a little bit of your personality/who you are

@Dean Talanehzar excellent point on location

How do companies determine which keywords to pick up on within resumes and what should applicants do to figure out how to adjust their experience to encompass what those keywords are/are about?

imo ai should refine, not replace (have it find powerful or relevant words or tailor what u already have, but i dont think it should be used to generate entire bullet points or sections)

Not on the resume itself, sorry if I wasn’t clear.
Well done resume that stands out plus the candidate reaches out to someone on the hiring team and is able to hold a conversation with that person / those persons

All the keywords are in the job description. 🙂 The JD is a map to what is most important to the hiring manager.

I’m curious, where do most successful hires actually come from these days? Is it mostly referrals, direct applications, or recruiter outreach?
And when someone gets referred internally, does that usually move them further in the process or just help get their resume looked at?

What is the best approach to contact a recruiter for a role I’m interested in? Is it better to reach out before applying or after? And If everybody else is reaching out, how can I be unique?

“ (company name) + Talent Acquisition, Univeristy Relations, University Recruiter, Early Careers, Emerging Talent Recruiter, Campus Recruiter, Early Talent Partner”
BG
Brian Gossler5:31 PM
Company name AND recruiter OR talent
Put the above in the search bar and you should get some results.
Alternatively, you can go to the company LI page, go to People, and search for people in HR, and then you should find some people involved with talent acquisition.
ES
Ed Snook5:31 PM
Using LI you should be able to find one or more recruiters at whatever company you’re applying to. From there, generally you can find out what type of roles each recruiter is hiring for (example: “GTM recruiter)…
Or sometimes “campus recruiter” is the person you’re looking for

On this topic: Ideally you should be able the three-part question “why this industry, why this company, and why this role?”
❤️ 3
TD
Tite Divava5:34 PM
Thank you @Ed Snook , just to follow up, what makes a referral actually effective? Is it simply submitting the referral, or does it matter how well the employee knows the candidate?
MF
Marcus Fong5:35 PM
@Tite Divava both. many referrals require the employee to submit some kind of blurb or tidbit as to why they personally think the candidate is a good fit, but even if the referral doesnt require a blurb, the employee should, to some degree, be able to argue/fight for you
☝️
ES
Ed Snook5:36 PM
Ideally you want someone who is going to advocate for you at the company you’re applying at. So yes, it matters for sure. Just submitting the referral isn’t always enough. And I agree with you @Marcus Fong !
❤️

Amelia Chase5:37 PM
I did go into a place I was interested in near my campus, and they asked for an interview and I am currently working there!! So I do think in some cases it can work (it is a very small company)

Marcus Fong5:38 PM
also the employee’s job function/title, and its relation to what you’re applying to, does matter. even if my best friend was a SWE manager at apple, their referral doesn’t mean much if im applying to the Finance intern program. if youre out for a referral, find someone who can speak your language
❗ 2
MF
Marcus Fong5:42 PM
i think if youre getting into pe/vc/ib, start with campus organizations, programs, competitions, network with your campus faculty, and leverage those networks and experiences to get into an internship
KC
Katherine Carter5:45 PM
Maybe this question has already been answered, but how do you connect with a hiring manager or a recruiter outside of doing an application? What's the way to get your 'in' and get seen by a person, and then proceed to apply once you've been 'noticed'? Kind of goes along with Natalya's question

There's probably better ideas out there but reaching out on LinkedIn isn't a bad place to start, the literal worst consequence is they just ignore you but people usually love to talk!
❤️
TD
Tite Divava5:47 PM
Another way I’ve heard is to comment on a post they made or a comment they made on a different post. It’s public, but could catch their attention or make them curious about checking out your profile
ES
Ed Snook5:48 PM
Figuring out who the hiring manager is can be difficult, for sure. Leverage referrals, make some inferences, and try to reach out to folks who you think might either be the hiring manager or, based on their role, might know the hiring manager

The other concern that I get is "wasting" a referral, applying for something with a referral even if I don't find myself 100% qualified. Is there such thing as wasting the referral? Or getting a connection but you don't end up getting that interview/application in?
